Kevin has never said he opposes the latest version of the gang tax

BACKGROUND: Today the Sacramento Bee ran a story saying that Kevin opposes the proposed anti-gang sales tax increase proposed by County Supervisor Roger Dickinson. The headline on the  “jump” page states “Fargo supports the levy, challenger Johnson opposes it.”

THE FACTS: Kevin has never said he opposes the latest version of the tax. He’s consulting with public safety officials to see if this is the most effective way to battle gangs. Here’s the entire text of the email Kevin sent the Sacramento Bee: “My first priority as Mayor is to combat crime. It’s our most pressing issue and an area where the current leadership is failing. My first question for the Mayor, before I endorse any new taxes, is whether we are spending our existing resources efficiently. Is there any waste? Do we have our priorities in order? At a time when people are paying crazy gas prices and losing their jobs, I think we need to see how to fight crime with the money we have before people are asked to pay more. I just don’t believe the current administration is doing everything they can. It also will be critical to have support from law enforcement, and to make sure the City of Sacramento doesn’t get shortchanged in the new formula for the distribution of the funds.”
