SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento Mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson today named Steve Maviglio as campaign manager. Maviglio will be taking a leave from his post as Deputy Chief of Staff to Assembly Speaker Karen Bass to manage the campaign. Until the budget is passed, Maviglio will split his time between Speaker Bass and the Johnson mayoral campaign.
“Our campaign has attracted the best and brightest in our city that want to make this a city that works for everyone,” said Johnson. “Steve will bring his know-how of our city, the capitol, and his relationships with our city’s leadership in the public and private sector to our campaign team.”
“Kevin Johnson has the passion, energy, and vision to make Sacramento the world class city it has the potential to be,” said Maviglio. “Kevin’s values of improving our schools, bolstering our city’s public safety efforts, and growing our economy are core Democratic principles. I am excited by his positive, issues-oriented campaign in what will be a ‘change’ election from the top of the ballot down to the local level.”
Maviglio has nearly 25 years working on Democratic campaigns on the local, state, and national level. Previous to joining the staff of Speaker Bass, he served as Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez’s chief spokesperson. Previously, he was press secretary for Gov. Gray Davis, and campaign strategist for the California Democratic Party in the 2004 and 2006 legislative campaigns, the Angelides for Governor campaign in 2006, and the campaign to defeat Governor Schwarzenegger’s initiatives in 2005. He also is publisher of one of the state’s leading Democratic websites, www.camajorityreport.com and was recently elected a delegate from Sacramento to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August.
Prior to moving to Sacramento in 2000, Steve worked in Washington, D.C. for the Clinton Administration and former Sacramento Congressman Vic Fazio. He also was a member of the New Hampshire legislature for three terms and worked on the presidential campaigns of President Bill Clinton, Gov. Michael Dukakis, and Sen. Gary Hart.
Active in the Sacramento community, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Natural Foods Coop, teaches political communication at CSUS, and is a member of a number community groups. He lives in Sacramento’s Elmhurst neighborhood.
