The campaign manager for Sacramento mayoral challenger Kevin Johnson launched a war of words against incumbent Heather Fargo this week, charging that Fargo's campaign has co-opted the campaign theme Johnson used earlier this year.

Steve Maviglio, a veteran of Sacramento politics who joined Johnson's campaign last week, said Fargo's new theme of "Summer of Change" is the same "Summer of Change" theme Johnson used in the lead-up to June 3, when Johnson received the most votes but not the majority needed to avoid a Nov. 4 runoff with Fargo. Several other mayoral hopefuls competed in that race.

"Yes, Mayor Fargo this will be a Summer of Change, from the White House right down to the Mayor's Office," Maviglio wrote in a press release questioning Fargo's choice of words, which went out in a letter to supporters this week.

Maviglio said that Fargo, mayor since 2001, has reason to talk about change after a record in office of cutting public safety, missing votes and overseeing a rise in crime.

He suggested that the "change" Fargo referred to was her decision to move to a smaller campaign office. There was no immediate response from Fargo's campaign.

Fargo is in for one of the toughest races of her political career against Johnson, a former NBA All-Star who has since worked on redevelopment and education issues in Sacramento, his hometown.
