Johnson Comments on Failed Gang Tax Initiative

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Mayor Fargo’s “gang tax” was rejected by the City Council on Tuesday night. It needed six votes to get on the ballot; it received just five. Kevin made the following statement after the vote.

“The soaring rate in crime under Mayor Fargo's watch didn't appear overnight and wouldn't have been solved with an eleventh-hour, election-year piecemeal approach that lacked the support of local law enforcement and community leaders.  We need a comprehensive strategy with broad-based community support that attacks both the problem and its root causes, and has the active support of law enforcement. That's what they'll get on day one when I am Mayor.”

“Tonight’s vote was an example of why our city needs new leadership; someone who has the ability to build consensus, bring the council together, and tackle the issue of crime head-on. I applaud Council members Cohn, Waters, Sheedy, and particularly Councilmember Hammond for their concern for public safety and a comprehensive strategy to fight the rise in crime in Sacramento, as well as the other city council members who shared their concern about rising crime. No one cares more about Sacramento’s youth than I do, and I am committed to begin working on a new plan.”
