Volunteer of the Week: Willie Mincey

Thursday, September 4, 2008

Willie Mincey is an alumnus of Sac High and is spending his summer break as an intern for the Kevin Johnson for Mayor Campaign.  He graduated in 2007 as part of the first graduating class from the new St. HOPE.  Willie is now a sophomore at UCLA.

How do you know Kevin Johnson?

I have known Kevin Johnson for some time.  While I was at St. HOPE, I got to know Mr. Johnson through student government and other before and after school programs he was involved in.

Why are you volunteering for the Kevin Johnson for Mayor Campaign?

The reason I came to work on this campaign is that I am a firm believer in the mission and goals that Kevin Johnson has in mind for Sacramento.  Mr. Johnson first gained my trust by turning around Sac High. When I first started high school, it was a low performing school. But, Mr. Johnson had a vision for Sac High to turn it into one of the best schools in Sacramento, and eventually one of the best schools in the nation. I believed in his mission and it turned out to be the best for me. Kevin Johnson also has a mission and vision for Sacramento and I believe in that mission.

What do you think Kevin Johnson will do as Mayor?

It’s time for a change in Sacramento. I am sure that Kevin Johnson will do his best to turn this city into one of the finest in the nation. I chose to dedicate my summer to the Kevin Johnson for Mayor Campaign because I want to do my part in helping Mr. Johnson become mayor, and help Sacramento become a great city.
